Singaporean jailed 15 month for bid to cheat bank
KUALA LUMPUR, Wednesday – A Singapore businessman who pleaded guilty to trying to cheat the Malaysian-French Bank of $87,500 was jailed 15 months today and placed under police supervision for a year.
Magistrate Aslina Joned also jailed Lim Kah Soon, 33, for 10 months for having a forged identity card at the city police headquarters here on Aug 1. The sentences are to run concurrently.
Counsel Jerald Gomez said in mitigation that Lim was a Pawn and that he had been pressured by a man called “Ah Keong” to go to the bank to withdraw the money.
He also urged the court to consider the fact that Lim did not resist arrest but gave police “his fullest co-operation.”
Lim had gone to the bank at the UBN Tower in jalan P. Ramlee on july 21 and tried to mislead bank officer Razali Mohamed Yusuff inti believing that he was authorized to withdraw $87,500 from an account of the Sungai Besi Mines (M) Bhd via a telegraphic transfer.
The money was to be remitted to the bank’s Alor Setar branch from where Lim would withdraw money under the name of Ngu Cheng Leng.
Encik Mohamed checked with Sungai Besi Mines and was informed that no such transaction was made out on the material day and no money was due to a Ngu Cheng Leng.
Encik Mohamed then lodged a police report. Lim travelled to Alor Setar the same day to collect the money and was arrested the next day.

Cop suspended over claims of fondling youth
PETALING JAYA: A 23-year-old constable has been suspended pending investigations into allegations that he molested a male American college student at the Puchong station.
The student, in his 20s, of a private college here was picked up from his Subang area home for possession of cannabis recently.
In his police report last week, he alleged that the constable came to his lock-up, handcuffed and blindfolded him and took him to a room supposedly to interrogate.
There someone unzipped his pants and started fondling his private parts for several minutes.
PJ Selatan deputy OCPD Asst Comm Osman Abu Bakar confirmed that a policeman had been suspended for not following procedures while taking out a detainee from the lock-up.
It is learned that apart from molesting the student, the ‘person’ had also taunted him about his private parts and sexuality.
The student was later returned to the lock-up and warned not to relate the incident to anyone.
He subsequently lodged a police report.
During investigations, the student identified the constable as the person who came to the lock-up and took him away.
The student, whose parents are in the United States, has been staying here for about 10 years.
The Constable was confirmed in his rank three years ago.
