Seminar on Detention Without Trial, 1997

KUALA LUMPUR, Sun: Participants at a Bar Council seminar on human rights yesterday chaired by Jerald Gomez asked the government to review and ultimately repeal the laws which allow arrest and detention without trial and restrict the residence and movements of persons.

The argument was that such laws are contrary to the rule of law, violate human rights, had been used to repress political opposition and go against established religious, cultural and social values and norms.

Caning and Corporal Punishment, 2005

PETALING JAYA: The 20-year jail term and 10 strokes of the rotan imposed on Canny Ong’s murderer Ahmad Najib Aris for raping her has become a topic of discussion.

Many readers called up to ask whether the convicted murderer would be caned before he is hanged. Criminal lawyer Jerald Gomez said this was provided under section 289 (b) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

PETALING JAYA: The Government cannot ban a company but can investigate its affairs if it deemed it to be of public interest.

“Under Section 195 of the Companies Act 1965, the Minister is empowered to declare a company against public interest,” said Jerald Gomez, chairman of the Bar Council’s corporate and commercial law committee.

New Law on Contempt

“True change can only be ascertained from the judgements of the court when decisions are made based on fixed objective criteria and not the personalities involved,” says Jerald Gomez, a lawyer who headed the Bar Council’s committee responsible for drafting the proposed Contempt of Court Act.

Top police officers get human rights training, Kuala Lumpur 2002

About 120 police top brass and trainers will be educated on human rights issues in the first major dialogue-cum-workshop organised and conducted by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) starting today. 

Tomorrow, Bar Council human rights sub-committee member Jerald Allen Gomez will brief participants on the workshop which is interspersed with dialogue and question-and-answer sessions.
